Tips and advice…

  • Keep your clay wrapped in plastic and in a cool place until you are ready to use it

  • Put down something to protect your table or surfaces from moisture, like a plastic table cloth, or cut open a bin liner or a plastic bag

  • Work on top of newspaper or an old tea towel or cloth - clay will stick to shiny surfaces

  • You can cut clay easily with a table knife, it doesn’t need to be really sharp, and clay will wash off easily with hot soapy water

  • Use the back of a teaspoon to smooth surfaces

  • A small paintbrush is helpful for decoration and joining, but not essential

  • Wrap your projects in plastic to keep them damp - this way you can take a break from making and come back to it at a later time or in a couple of days time (so long as the piece is completely wrapped)

  • When you bring your pots back, do not stack them - place them in a box and use bubble wrap or newspaper to stop them falling over and to protect them from damage
